What is a stainless steel pipe flange?
A stainless steel pipe flange is a type of industrial hardware used as an attachment point for two pipes or a pipe and a valve, fitting, or other device. It normally consists of four parts: the center base (known as the hub), one or more top pieces (also known as rim sections) clamped together with bolts, and two gaskets that are placed on either side of the joined section. The flange is usually threaded on the inside so that it can be attached to pipes using nuts and bolts. Are stainless steel flanges corrosion resistant?
Yes, stainless steel flanges are highly corrosion resistant due to the high chromium content present in them. The chromium present in the metal binds with oxygen and forms a passive layer of chromium oxide which prevents further oxidation or corrosion. This passive layer is electrochemically more stable than the base metal and acts as a barrier between the underlying material and the environment, thus preventing further corrosion.
When exposed to hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, or any other strong acids at high concentrations, stainless steel flanges have excellent resistance properties against corrosion by passivating their surface. In addition, they also have excellent resistance against many organic and inorganic compounds along with chlorides typically found in industrial environments like seawater, for instance.
